If It Be Your Will

The guests all arrive

wearing all the right faces,

time to mingle and smile

remain in good graces.

Another day, another party,

it’s become one big haze,

this one, ten years my junior;

wish I could understand His ways.

Am I meant to remain

atop this broken hill,

singing aloud Your praises --

is this Your will?

Rejoice with all,

dance with none,

tell me what You want,

will I always be one?

Then I can journey alone,

voice silent and still,

carrying my fetus of sorrow

if it be Your will.

Being single when you want to be married involves profound grief and hopelessness, which can completely swallow and consume a person. Such feelings go way beyond general loneliness. Let’s not forget the plight and pain of those struggling with prolonged singlehood. This poem is my attempt at expressing and sharing a sliver of what it’s like to be them – SA.
